Tring tring... You're under arrest!
PUNE: The advent of mobile phones has changed many aspects of crime and ways in which they are committed. However, mobile phones, which were used with convenience by underworld elements in the past, have now proved to be their nemesis.
Statistics show that many highprofile cases, like the murder of former national tennis champion Kartikraj, the arrest of dacoit Daulatsingh Tak, the BSNL scam, the murder of city-based student Dengulkar, who hailed from Nanded, were solved after tracking the mobile phones used by criminals or their associates.

The Pune police, who were under "political pressure" to make a breakthrough in the assassination bid on NCP youth president Prakash Phulaware, managed to arrest main accused Sandip Gujar on Sunday after tracing the calls made from Gujar''s mobile phone.
In the Dengulkar murder case, the accused kidnapped Dengulkar and made extortion calls to his parents on his mobile phone. However, as the extortion "deal" failed to materialise, Dengulkar was killed and his body thrown in the Gaganbavda ghat, Kolhapur. Although the accused had sold off the handset after making the calls, the IMEI number led to their arrest three months later. Also, three cases of extortion and kidnapping were recently cracked by tracking the mobile phones of the accused.
According to assistant commissioner of police (crime) Sanjay Jadhav, nearly 40 per cent of the high-profile cases solved by the crime branch are detected through the use of mobile phones by the accused.
Placing a mobile phone under a tracking scanner or tracing it via its IMEI number are among the techniques used. "Even the movement of the accused, if he is carrying a mobile phone, can be traced using latest technology," he said.
